Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction
Abdominoplasty, or what is more commonly known as a tummy tuck, is major surgery. The point of the tummy tuck is to remove excess skin and excess fat from your lower or middle abdomen, as well as to tighten abdominal wall muscles. A tummy tuck can make a visually dramatic difference in your abdomen's protrusion. A tummy tuck will, however, produce a permanent scar that can extend from one hip to the other, depending on how extensive of a a procedure was required to correct your abdominal protrusion.
This scar is the primary difference between the effects of abdominoplasty and liposuction. The other difference is that the positive results of tummy tuck are more prominent, generally, than that of liposuction on the abdomen.
The best tummy tuck candidates are those in good physical shape and condition whose fatty deposit or loose skin around their abdomen has not responded to their serious attempts at diet and exercise. Common tummy tuck patients who see visibly positive results are moms whose abdominal muscles have weakened after multiple childbirths. Other tummy tuck candidates are older adults whose skin has lost its elasticity, sometimes caused by their being slightly overweight.
Poor tummy tuck candidates, however, are those who anticipate considerable weight loss and women who anticipate pregnancies in the future. A surgeon might also suggest you are a poor tummy tuck candidate if you have scarring from prior abdominal surgery, because this would tend to make the scars from the tummy tuck too prominent.
Make sure before you decide on a tummy tuck you are not expecting too much. Yes, your abdomen can look flatter and probably will, but it's not the fountain of youth. If you think it is, a tummy tuck is probably not for you.
