Are There Any Risks to Liposuction?
What are the dangers of liposuction, or are there any? Let's take a look.
A few years back a medical study was published that talked about the dangers of liposuction, suggesting that liposuction, the cosmetic fat removal surgery, could be fatal in some cases.
Researchers talked to numerous physicians in the United States. Five of these medical specialists gave them the names and circumstances of five patients who died during New York City liposuction procedures within the previous five years.
Did this study really show dangers of liposuction, however? Of these five liposuction patients, three died from a fatal decrease in their blood pressure and one died from a blood clot. The cause of the death of the fifth liposuction patient was not disclosed as the family refused to allow the disclosure.
The physicians involved said they could not say in any of the five cases that the liposuctions were the cause of any of these women's death, though all of the physicians said that they were almost convinced that these incidents indicated dangers in liposuction.
During liposuction, a surgeon uses a vacuum-like apparatus to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. At the same time, salt water and other pharmaceuticals are injected in the patient to keep the patient anesthetized either generally or locally and to keep blood loss to a minimum.
The physicians questioned about the dangers of liposuction said that in three of the five cases they conjectured that these drugs and their toxic effects may have contributed to the deaths.
Results of the study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Plastic surgeons overall maintain that the dangers of liposuction are no more considerable than the dangers of any other surgical procedure.
